Introduction

At the core of Ktown Team's mission is a belief that community transformation happens when every voice is heard. This article describes how the organization is governed - from our Alliance Council to our approach to consensus-building - and how we try to ensure that the people most affected by decisions are involved in making them.

Alliance Council

Purpose and Composition

The Alliance Council is the primary body for collaborative governance. It comprises 72 members selected to reflect the diversity of Koreatown - culturally, generationally, and professionally. Members are chosen through a combination of community nominations and an open application process.

Roles and Responsibilities

Council members:

  • Provide strategic guidance on Ktown Team initiatives.
  • Serve as bridges between the organization and their respective community segments.
  • Participate in decision-making on major organizational policies and projects.
  • Champion the values and mission of Ktown Team within their networks.

Members serve rotating terms to maintain a balance of continuity and fresh perspectives.

How the Council Operates

  • Regular Meetings: Held both in-person and virtually to maximize participation.
  • Open Access: Meetings are streamed and archived so any community member can stay informed.
  • Language Inclusion: Translation is available in multiple languages so that language is not a barrier to participation.

Community Leadership Model

Philosophy

We challenge traditional hierarchies by making leadership accessible to anyone, regardless of background or experience. Those closest to the issues are often best positioned to create solutions.

Leadership Pathways

  • Project-based Leadership: Community members can lead initiatives aligned with their interests and expertise.
  • Team Leadership: Opportunities to lead teams focused on specific community needs.
  • Mentorship: Pairing experienced leaders with emerging voices for knowledge transfer and growth.

Distributed Leadership

Our flat hierarchy allows for dynamic role assignments based on skills, passion, and community trust. This enables rapid response to emerging needs, fosters innovation through diverse perspectives, and gives individuals real ownership of community challenges.

Decision-Making Processes

Consensus-Building

We use a modified consensus model that:

  • Allows for productive dissent - differing opinions are opportunities for deeper understanding.
  • Ensures all voices are heard through facilitation that prevents any single perspective from dominating.
  • Aims for solutions that address the core concerns of all stakeholders.

Levels of Decision-Making

Decisions are categorized into strategic, operational, and tactical levels, with clear guidelines on who has authority at each level. This structure allows for efficient day-to-day operations while ensuring community involvement in decisions with broad impact.

Community Involvement

We use a range of tools to bring the community into the decision-making process:

  • Digital platforms for community-wide input on key issues.
  • Regular town halls - both virtual and in-person - for open discussion.
  • Focus groups for deep dives into specific issues.
  • A continuously available channel for ideas and feedback.

Feedback and Responsive Action

Gathering Feedback

We collect input through multiple channels - our digital platform (with multilingual support), community surveys, and in-person listening sessions across Koreatown.

Acting on Feedback

We commit to clear timelines for addressing community input. A public record tracks the status of community-raised issues and suggestions, and we provide regular updates on actions taken in response.
